PROJECT

Australia Awards Fiji (AAF)

The Challenge

Fiji faces skills shortages, labour mobility pressures, and gaps between education and workforce needs. The Australian Government’s Australia Awards Fiji program is helping to address these human capital challenges by equipping Fijian scholars with world-class education, leadership skills and practical expertise in priority sectors.

The Approach

Australia Awards Fiji is a four-year, AUD9.5 million scholarship program that strengthens human capital by equipping Fijian students with internationally recognised qualifications and fostering inclusive leadership to support national development.

Through the program, scholars gain knowledge that is directly relevant to national development priorities. Alumni return home to Fiji with strengthened capacity in areas such as governance, health, education, infrastructure and climate resilience. They apply their learning to deliver improvements in workplace performance and community outcomes. By promoting equity and inclusion, fostering professional networks and building lasting partnerships between Fiji and Australia, the program helps close skills gaps and invest in Fiji’s future leaders.

Australia Awards Fiji provides competitive, merit-based opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study in Australia and the region, aligned with Fiji’s development priorities. The program manages the full cycle of Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS) and delivers Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships (AAPS) from pre-selection to mobilisation and completion with regional institutions.

Delivery is managed by the Australian High Commission with support from the Fiji Program Support Platform and joint governance with the Government of Fiji. The Abt-managed Fiji Program Support Platform implements a portfolio of Australian Government-funded development programs, including AAF, in alignment with Fiji's national priorities and the Australia-Fiji Vuvale Partnership.

The Results

Australia Awards Fiji aims to build a high-performing, inclusive cadre of leaders who can contribute to Fiji’s national reforms and development outcomes.

Expected results include:

  • Building skills and knowledge: Scholars gain internationally recognised qualifications and expertise in priority sectors, applying their learning to strengthen workplaces and national development.
  • Fostering inclusion and leadership: The program promotes equitable access for women, people with disabilities, and marginalised groups, while preparing alumni to become leaders who drive innovation and shape policy.
  • Strengthening partnerships and networks: Australia Awards deepens Fiji–Australia ties, creating enduring professional networks that support collaboration, knowledge exchange and regional cooperation.
