PROJECT
Australia Fiji Governance Partnership (AFGP)
The Challenge
Fiji has improved transparency and accountability over the last decade but there are risks related to ongoing public debt, resource and employment constraints and weak engagement of communities with the election process. The Australian Government’s Australia Fiji Governance Partnership (AFGP) aims to tackle these challenges through targeted support to strengthen civil service reform, economic governance and democratic norms and values.
The Approach
The Australia Fiji Governance Partnership is a four-year, AUD25 million investment, aimed to support more effective, accountable and inclusive governance, economic and institutional reform in Fiji. AFGP is managed by the Australian High Commission, with select program management and technical support provided through the Abt-managed Fiji Program Support Platform.
To foster engaged, trusted partnerships, AFGP hosts a bi-annual partnership forum to bring together multilaterals, civil society and government partners.
AFGP is delivered through grants, a Performance and Innovation Fund and a Community Engagement Fund. AFGP’s Technology and Governance Unit is an integrated team of digital technology specialists that manages and implements AFGP’s support to whole of government and other strategic partners.
The Abt-managed Fiji Program Support Platform implements a portfolio of Australian Government-funded development programs, including AFGP, in alignment with Fiji's national priorities and the Australia-Fiji Vuvale Partnership.
The Results
AFGP’s expected end of program outcomes are:
- Selected Government of Fiji agencies implement reforms through policy, systems and processes designed to enable a more modern, productive and professional civil service.
- Select Government of Fiji agencies deliver key economic reforms and improved public financial management.
- Fiji’s democratic institutions, including Parliament and the Elections Office demonstrate increased effectiveness, accountability and transparency in delivering their functions.
